Nearly two thirds of world labor work for the informal economy

A report by the International Labor Organization (ILO) on April 30 reveals that more than 61 percent of the world's working population, or 2 billion people, make a living in the economy. unofficial.

In light of this, the ILO emphasizes that transition to the formal economy is key to ensuring workers' rights as well as satisfactory working conditions. According to Rafael Diez de Medina, Director of the ILO Statistics Division, the high rate of unofficial labor in all forms has caused numerous adverse consequences for workers, enterprises and communes. It is also a great challenge for the effort to bring decent work to all. The report also shows that the proportion of men in informal employment (63%) is higher than that of women (58.1%). ILO says that over 2 billion informal workers in the world, just over 740 million are women. According to ILO, education is the main factor influencing the informal level of the workforce. Increased education will reduce the proportion of informal employment. Secondary or high school graduates will have more opportunities to obtain formal employment than those who do not attend school or have not completed basic education. In addition, informal employment in rural areas is almost double that in urban areas. The ILO publishes the findings in the latest report, "Women and Men in the Informal Economy: A Statistical Image," which gathers data from more than 100 countries. The authors of the report emphasize that these specific data are useful for developing effective policies to address informal employment. The ILO report states that for hundreds of millions of workers, informality means that there is a lack of social protection, workplace rights, and adequate working conditions, while for businesses, This means low productivity and lack of access to finance. In Africa, 85.8% of the workforce is informal. This rate is 68.2% in Asia-Pacific, 68.6% in Arab countries, 40% in the Americas and only over 25% in Europe and Central Asia. In all, 93% of the world's informal employment is concentrated in emerging and developing countries.
